PROGRAM OFFERINGS 2006/07

Our primary program is National Rebuilding Day which falls on the last Saturday in April every year. On this day we historically repair or rehabilitate between 15-34 homes and non-profit shelters in Washington County. This day is the culmination of many, many months of preparation that begins with the solicitation of qualified applicants from many sources, and the intake process, which involves a personal visit to the homeowner to explain our program and verify income criteria. Our project manager then does a preliminary scope of work of the most needed home repairs. Based on the urgency of repairs, status of the homeowner, i.e.: elderly, disabled or young children at home, and availability of resources each project year, selections are made and approved by the Board of Directors. Homeowners are notified of the decision by no later than March 15 of each year. A "house captain" is assigned to each house chosen for the project year. The "house captain" works in close proximity with an "area captain" who has direct responsibility for homes within a certain geographic range. The "area captains" are most often board members with construction backgrounds who also fill this role.

Material lists are prepared, skilled and non-skilled volunteer help is recruited and coordinated. The logistics committee prepares for the kick-off breakfasts that send all the volunteers out to spend the day "Neighbor helping Neighbor."

An additional program offering that began in September 1998 is our "Emergency Small Repair Program". Many of the requests we get from homeowners are for relatively minor repairs, and are easily met by our volunteer handypersons. We are seeking to add to these volunteers so as to cover as broad a geographic area as possible in Washington County.

Youth Partnership Program - denotes our efforts to work with various youth groups in the county. Historically each August we work with students at Pacific University to accomplish a major house painting or clean-up project. In the summer and fall we schedule projects when possible with youth groups to paint, clean yards and outreach to the community with door-to-door application placement. We believe that involving youth in these ways benefits all concerned, the homeowner and the young people who have an opportunity to see conditions and life styles that they might not get a chance to observe otherwise.

Our newest program is the Mid-Sized/ Year Round Repair Program. It is through this program that we address the repair needs of low-income homeowners that cannot wait until April each year, but are too large to be considered a "small repair". Jobs that we aren't able to get to on our National Rebuilding Day are also handled under this program. We strive to accomplish at least one or more of these projects approximately every month. Repairs such as dry rot removal, wheelchair ramps, and the installation of handicapped showers are typical.
